What's is Oscillating Universe Theory ? 

The oscillating universe theory is a cosmological model that combines both the Big Bang and the Big Crunch as part of a cyclical phenomenon. That is, if this theory is correct, then the universe in which we exist between a Big Bang and a Big Crunch.

In other words, our universe may be the first of a possible series of universes or it may be the nth universe in the series.

As we know, in the Big Bang Theory, the expansion of the universe is considered to be very hot, very dense and very small unit. In fact, if we extrapolate back to the moment of the Big Bang, we are able to reach a point characterized by infinitely high energy and density as well as zero volume.

This description would have only one meaning - all laws of physics would be thrown out the window. This is quite unacceptable for physicists. To make matters worse, some cosmologists even believe that the universe will eventually reach a maximum point of expansion and when this happens it will collapse into itself again.

This will inevitably lead to the same circumstances when we extrapolate back to the Big Bang moment. To overcome this dilemma, some scientists are proposing that perhaps the universe will not ultimately reach the point of eccentricity.

Instead, due to the repulsive force brought about by the quantum effects of gravity, the universe will bounce back to an expansion. An expansion (Big Bang) followed by a collapse (Big Crunch) in a way that is called Big Bounce. The surge marks the end of the previous universe and the beginning of the next.

However for this matter the possibility of a Big Bounce or even a Big Crunch is becoming insignificant. The most recent measurements of CMBR or cosmic microwave background radiation suggest that the universe will continue to expand and will most likely be known as the Big Freeze or Heat Death.

CMBR readings are currently being assembled by very precise measurement equipment, known as WMAP or Wilkinson microwave anisotropic probes. It is the same instrument that has measured the age of our universe with sharp accuracy. It is therefore very unlikely that future findings will deviate substantially from what has been revealed about the expansion of the universe so far.

However there is a mysterious entity whose deep understanding can change the possibilities. This entity, known as dark energy, is believed to be responsible for advancing galaxies and subsequently accelerating expansion of the universe. As long as its actual assets are not very different, which are visible now, we may have to harbor Oscillating Universe Theory.
