Most of us can differentiate between vegetables and fruits but when it comes to the older aged question which is " Is Tomato A Fruit Or  Vegetable ? " 

What’s the Difference Between a Fruit and a Vegetable?

Generally, fruits and vegetables are given much attention for being rich sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber .

Although they are very common in mangoes, there are also some distinct differences between fruits and vegetables. However, this difference will depend dramatically on whether you are talking to a farmer or a chef.

Botanical Classification 


Botanical classification of fruits and vegetables is mainly based on the composition and function of the part of the plant in question.

Fruits are made from flowers, contain seeds and aid in the reproductive process of the plant. Some common fruits include apples, peaches, blueberries and raspberries .

Vegetables, on the other hand, are the roots, stem, leaves or other supporting parts of the plant. Some of the well-known vegetables include spinach, lettuce, carrots, beets and celery .

Culinary Classification

When it comes to cooking, the classification of fruits and vegetables changes considerably compared to how they are classified botanically.

In culinary practice, fruits and vegetables are mainly used and applied based on their flavor profile.

Generally, a fruit has a soft texture and leads to the sweet side. It can also be slightly spicy or tangy. It is best suited for desserts, pastries, smoothies, jams or eaten by itself as a snack.

In contrast, a vegetable usually has a blender and possibly a bitter taste. It usually has a harder texture than fruit and, although some are raw, cooking is required. They are best suited for savory dishes like stir-fries, stews, salads and casseroles.

The botanical classification: Tomatoes are fruits.

Botanists will use botanical classification, which is based on the physical characteristics of the plant, like the structure, function and organization of the plant. Therefore, botanically, is a 'fruit' seed-bearing product that grows from the ovaries of a flowering plant or, in other words, a fruit is a way for plants to spread their 'seeds'. A vegetable fruit has at least one seed and grows from the flower of the plant. With this definition in mind, tomatoes are classified as fruits because they contain seeds and grow from the flower of the tomato plant.

Botanical words, on the other hand, are not a 'botanical', a defined definition, but a general term encompassing all other edible aspects of the plant; Roots, stems and leaves.  So we put on our vegetable caps, we would classify foods like apples, strawberries and peaches as fruits including tomatoes!

The Culinary Classification: Tomatoes are vegetables.

A nutritionist, chef, or even your grandmother, will use the culinary classification system, which defines fruits and vegetables in a slightly different way, depending on how the plants are used and their flavor profile. Culinary speaking, a 'vegetable' usually has a hard texture, taste in flavor and often requires cooking in dishes such as stews, soups or stir-fries. Whereas, a 'fruit' has a softer texture, which is either sweet or tart and is often enjoyed raw or in desserts or jams. 

Tomatoes can be made juicy, sweet and raw. Nevertheless, we also prepare tomatoes in savory dishes, which is why we usually classify tomatoes as vegetables.


Botanical vs Culinary Classification

So why can we classify tomatoes in two different ways, when it confuses all of us? These definitions have their objectives. For example, botanical classification is useful for botanists when they want to discover the origin of tomatoes, help them identify different varieties of tomatoes or understand how to grow and harvest different tomatoes. 

The definition of culinary may be more useful to the general public, nutritionists and chefs because foods that are from the same botanical family may not have the same nutritional composition. For example, cantaloupe melons, watermelons, butternut squash, cucumbers and pumpkins all belong to the same botanical family, but have different nutritional compositions. 

Other vegetable fruits that are considered vegetables are: Avocado, Olive, Pumpkin, Tomato, Sweetcore, Angate, Cucumber, Green Pea, Chilli, Eubergine.



Tomatoes are part of your 5-a-day

For 5-day recommendations, tomatoes are classified as a vegetable, which is the definition of culinary, as this is what most people learn about fruits and vegetables. An adult portion of tomatoes is a medium-sized tomato or 7 cherry tomatoes, remember to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables so that you can reach your daily 5-day run.

In short, tomatoes are usually prepared in savory dishes despite being a vegetable dish, which is why they are often described as vegetable from a culinary point of view. However, who cares when tomatoes taste as good as they do! We can all agree that tomatoes are easy snacks, delicious in stews and a healthy choice in our diet, providing us with fiber, vitamins and minerals.
